Dear Thompson Middle School Families, Students, and Community:

I hope that everybody had a fantastic summer! As the new school year rapidly approaches and the summer break comes to an end, I would like all of you to know that the entire faculty and staff at TMS have been working extremely hard over the summer to prepare for another spectacular school year.

To our incoming 5th-grade students and our new students and families, I welcome you to Thompson Middle School (TMS) and hope that all of you enjoy your experience at TMS.  I would like to invite all our 5th-grade students and new students to the middle school for a student tour on Thursday, August 24th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The half hour tours will take place at 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm, 6:30 pm, and 7:00 pm.  To our 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade returning students and families, I would like to welcome all of you back.

This school year we will be introducing a new daily schedule.  This schedule provides increased minutes for classroom instruction and student learning, as well as, a daily cardio/socio break and an Academic Growth and Support (AGS) period.  The AGS period will provide students with intervention and enrichment opportunities.  Intervention opportunities will be in the areas of Reading and Math.  Enrichment opportunities will be in STEM/STEAM related areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The anticipated start for the AGS period will be early October 2017.

Another change that I would like to highlight is the appointment of Ms. Melinda Smith as the new superintendent for Thompson Public Schools.  I would like to welcome Ms. Smith to Thompson Public Schools.  We are all very excited to have Ms. Smith in our district and look forward to her leadership in preparing students with the 21st Century skills needed to be successful in today’s world.

Throughout the year there will be opportunities to meet all the staff at TMS.  Our first opportunity will be at our open house. I would like to invite every one of you to our upcoming open house on Thursday, September 7, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  This year we will be offering a complimentary pasta dinner as part of our open house.  Pasta will be served from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.   I hope that all of you can join us for dinner, meet the TMS faculty and staff, and see all that TMS offers.

Another event I would like to bring to your attention is a community presentation addressing bullying.   I would like to invite everyone to our Auditorium on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at 6:00 pm for a presentation by Anti-bully speaker, Keith Deltano ( who will be bringing his anti-bully message to Thompson, CT.

Lastly, student schedules will be sent home by email this Friday, August 18, 2017.

I wish all our students a very successful year. If you need to contact me, please feel free to call or email me.  My door is always open for professional conversation, questions, suggestions, and concerns.  I eagerly await meeting this year’s challenges and celebrating our successes together as a school community.

Christopher Scott,
TMS Principal
